Inside the Forces: Advocate for nurses

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, December 9, 2008

In Force of Magnetism 1: Quality of nursing leadership, which falls under Component 1: Transformational leadership, nursing leadership advocates for the profession of nursing, as well as for individual nurses. Leaders are highly qualified, influential, and knowledgeable risk takers.

Examples of how an organization integrates quality of nursing leadership include the following:

  • A philosophy of nursing that is grounded in a theoretical framework
  • Staff-nurse involvement in creating the nursing strategic plan or nursing mission statement
  • The CNO facilitates nursing research, evidence-based practice, and advocates for staff
