In the news: Grant to help nurses find the pulse of ECG monitoring

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, November 17, 2008

The Yale School of Nursing in New Haven, CT, is hoping to pump up nurses' heart monitoring skills after being awarded the largest research grant in the college's history.

Yale professor Marjorie Funk and Barbara Drew, professor at the University of California-San Francisco School of Nursing, will lead a five-year, 16-hospital study testing the implementation of recent practice standards of electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring. The study—funded by the $3.9 million grant—aims to enhance nurses' abilities to accurately diagnose patients and deliver faster treatment.

Nurses participating in the study will use an interactive, online ECG monitoring education program created by Funk and Drew to hone their skills. Nurse "champions" will also be available in hospital units to provide further education about the online program.
