Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, November 10, 2008
Whether you are an experienced nurse looking for a change in your career focus or specialty or a new graduate taking your first steps as an RN, internships, fellowships, and apprenticeships can ease you in the right direction.
Typically, internships are programs for new grads that assist them in developing in their role as an RN, whereas fellowships and apprenticeships are opportunities for seasoned nurses to familiarize themselves in unknown specialties. Before accepting a place in one of these programs, be sure you have all of the information you need to make an informed and wise decision.
Make sure you answer these important questions, as they concern the details that can affect your everyday life:
- How flexible is the schedule?
- How long will you be precepted?
- Is there a formal mentoring program?
- What is the expectation as far as your responsibilities and patient-nurse ratios/assignments are concerned?
- What resources for your continued learning do they offer?
