Hospitals are always on the lookout for ways to improve patient care delivery. Rarely does it involve a cart of food.

Patients in the John and Mary Obzansky Pavilion of Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ, now receive bedside dining—a program in which staff serve personalized meals to their patients directly from a café style cart. The cart, which staff bring into patients' rooms, stores hot and cold dishes allowing a variety of meals—from chicken piccata to chilled salads—to be delivered at once. The pilot program also gives patients the option of switching their orders until the last minute.

Nurse Manager on the Obzansky Pavilion, Fran Schuster, says families comment favorably about the program that was launched in July. The hospital plans to employ the program in other units in the coming months.
