Every year, hospital staff are encouraged to get vaccinated for flu season. This year, there is a challenge involved.

Joint Commission Resources (JCR), an affiliate of The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO), recently issued a Flu Vaccination Challenge to boost vaccination rates among healthcare workers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that only 42% of healthcare workers surveyed were vaccinated during the 2005-2006 flu season. JCR proposes hospitals with higher vaccination rates could cut patients' risk for acquiring the infection.

The challenge states hospitals achieving a vaccination rate of 43% or more "will be recognized for their dedication to helping keep their employees healthy and helping to protect their patients." Hospitals wanting to participate in the challenge, which started in September, can do so until May 2009.
