This week's expert, Barbara A. Brunt, MA, MN, RN-BC, discusses the importance of documentation in a competency assessment program.

Q. How can I properly document the various components of my competency assessment program?

A. It is essential that your competency assessment program include appropriate documentation and maintenance of such documents. Below are documentation components that are absolutely essential:

  • Identify the specific competency being assessed. This includes the specific age ranges assessed as part of age-specific competencies.
  • Document specific steps in competency achievement. Consistency cannot be ensured unless the specific, step-by-step actions that must be performed to achieve competency are in writing. All assessors must have the same expectations of the people they are evaluating.
