Hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities are a way of life for staff educators. Finding a workload that is manageable comes from applying methods to clearly ensure that requests for your services are appropriate and of benefit to the organization. Start with aligning your work initiatives to the organization's strategic plan. This alignment will help you develop criteria for evaluating and prioritizing a plethora of requests. It helps your colleagues clarify and understand the value and importance of the education department and how it spends its time.

Next, clearly understand each request for education so proper methodology can be applied to the situation:

  • Develop a clear definition and description of the issue with rationale for why it requires education
  • Identify who will be affected
  • Define the magnitude of the request (does it involve one unit or several?)
  • Collect data to support the need
