Inside the Forces: Promote critical thinking with new graduate nurses
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, September 16, 2008
In Force of Magnetism 11: Nurses as teachers, nurses are expected to incorporate teaching into their professional practice. To meet this expectation, many nurses are preceptors, facilitating the orientation, growth, and development of new graduate nurses.
Encourage preceptors to ask their preceptees the following five questions to stimulate critical thinking and enhance decision-making skills:
- Given these lab results, how will you change your nursing care plan?
- How will you prioritize your care today?
- What else could be causing your patient’s symptoms?
- How will you determine the effectiveness of that intervention?
- How will you document your patient’s outcomes related to that treatment?
