Alleviating patients' pain and keeping costs to a minimum are goals at every hospital. According to a new study, there might be a way to meet them both simultaneously.

A recent study published in The Archives of Internal Medicine found that palliative care programs can help hospitals save more than $300 a day per seriously ill patient, while providing them with better care, specializing on pain relief. The study, which was conducted among eight diverse hospitals in the United States, also found palliative care programs significantly lowered pharmacy, laboratory, and intensive care costs.

Many hospitals have implemented palliative care programs during the past decade due to the rising number of patients with advanced illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, and kidney failure.
