This week's expert, Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, outlines the duties of an effective mentor.

Q. What are the primary responsibilities of a nursing mentor?

A. Mentors establish a relationship of indeterminate length for the purpose of acting as a role model on a long-term basis. A mentor functions as a coach who helps the mentoree grow professionally.

Some of the mentor's responsibilities include:

  • Teaching about the politics and subtle cultural nuances of an organization
  • Acting as a sounding board for decision-making and problem-solving
  • Introducing the mentoree to significant people within and outside of the organization
  • Offering encouragement and supportive feedback
