Inside scoop from our experts: Collaborate to improve outcomes

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 25, 2008

This week, a reader asks how to improve patient outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration. Read the response from our advisor Katherine Riley, MSN, RN, CNA, BC, ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® coordinator and assistant vice president of nursing at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, VT.

Q: How do you improve patient outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration?

A: An interdisciplinary collaboration, where each member of the healthcare team understands and respects the expertise and contributions of the others, is essential to improve patient care and outcomes.

A fall's committee is an example of interdisciplinary collaboration that benefits patient care by eliminating the risk to patients from falling. The committee membership includes nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and nursing assistants. The committee proactively identifies best practices to reduce patient falls. It also reviews recent falls and implements appropriate interventions.
