Inside the news: Aiming for the heart: New device helps patients avoid hospital

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 25, 2008

Heart failure patients might be able to avoid the hospital with a new implant device recently instituted at a Chicago hospital.

Cardiologists at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute of Northwestern Memorial Hospital–a hospital designated by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® since 1999–are among the first to use new wireless pressure sensor technology. About the size of a paperclip, the sensor is permanently implanted in the heart and has an electronic monitoring system able to wirelessly measure a patient's pulmonary artery pressure.

This system allows pressure data to be transmitted to a secure database; the data is then made available to physicians from a proprietary Web site or a handheld device, such as a Blackberry.
