Inside the Forces: Forces keep the flood waters at bay
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 19, 2008
Flood waters threatened to shut the doors of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in Iowa City—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) recipient in 2004—but “because UIHC’s culture is bound together by the 14 Forces of Magnetism, UIHC staff did not let the rising water interrupt patient care,” says Barbara Hannon, RN, MSN, CPHQ, MRP coordinator.
Force 1: Quality nursing leadership, for example, helped keep UIHC’s doors open. Nurse leaders came together to answer questions such as “What are we going to do if nurses become stranded at the hospital?” and “How do we help nurses get back to the hospital if roads are closed?” They then formed a plan to find answers. Because many staff nurses live 20 to 30 miles outside of Iowa City, says Hannon, the nursing leaders came up with a plan to fly essential personnel, such as nurses, in by helicopter and use caravans to pick up staff due to flooded roads.
