Inside scoop from our experts: Council chatter: Nurse-sensitive quality indicators

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 19, 2008

This week, a reader asks about the best place to discuss nurse-sensitive quality indicators. Read the response from our advisor Dorothy Anne Garman, RN, MSN, nursing consultant in Newport, RI.

Q: Where is the best place to discuss nurse-sensitive quality indicators?

A: Discuss nursing care issues that present opportunity for improvement at the organization’s nursing leadership council, the nursing quality council, or the nursing research council.

Review resources to see if there is an existing standardized definition of the indicator you wish to measure. The use of standardized language is important if you decide to use the data from this indicator for comparisons beyond your organization or perhaps benchmark on a national level.

It is essential that you define what you wish to achieve and how you want to measure this achievement because a well-defined indicator provides evidence or signs that show change has taken place. Therefore, make certain that the nurse-sensitive indicators chosen are clear and understood by everyone involved in the process.
