This week's expert, Barbara A. Brunt, MA, MN, RN-BC, director of nursing education and staff development for Summa Health System in Akron, OH, gives tips on choosing the right staff members to perform competency assessments.

Q. What qualities should I look for in a staff member who will be assessing nurse competencies?

A. First, understand that not all staff members should be trained to assess their colleagues' competency. Competency assessment is an acquired skill that not all healthcare professionals possess.

What qualifications should a competency assessor possess?

  • Excellent performance of the competencies being evaluated
  • Tact and the desire to help colleagues improve their job performance
  • The desire to acquire/enhance adult education skills
  • Demonstration of excellent interpersonal communication skills
