Inside the news: Wedding bells ring at Virginia hospital

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, August 5, 2008

Gowns are common sights at hospitals. But wedding gowns are reserved for rare occasions. Nurses at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® redesignation recipient in 2006—recently brought the aisle and the altar to one special patient.

Tracy DePaolis, a 27-year-old patient at Inova, has been battling colon cancer for the past year but planned a wedding for this December. As her health took a turn for the worst, however, oncology nurses understood the importance of having the ceremony sooner than later.

In two days, six oncology nurses and case managers, along with help from other departments, put together DePaolis’ wedding at the hospital chapel on July 11. The gift shop donated flowers, the nurses made alterations to a white gown, and invitations were created for 40 guests. The reception—complete with a wedding cake baked by a staff nurses’ daughter—took place in the hospital cafeteria.

Going the extra mile, as the nurses did in this situation, reflects Inova Fairfax Hospital’s commitment to providing Force of Magnetism 6: Quality of care to its patients.
