Inside the news: Louisiana nurses bring comfort and relief to flood victims in Iowa

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 29, 2008

Louisiana nurses know all too well the damage a flood can cause to people, homes, and hospitals. So six emergency room nurses from the state recently packed a truck full of supplies, raised $6,000, and drove 18 hours to two hospitals in Iowa to provide comfort and relief.

The six nurses, which included two from East Jefferson General Hospital—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® redesignation recipient in 2006—filled the truck with cleaning supplies, clothing, and toiletries. Upon reaching their two destinations in Cedar Rapids—St. Luke’s Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics—the nurses gave staff a little taste of New Orleans: they brought a pot full of infamous jambalaya along with carnival beads.

After providing the hospitals with supplies and donating the $6,000 to help with additional provisions, the nurses shared thoughts with one another, relating the experiences of Hurricane Katrina to the floods.
