This week, a reader asks how group facilitation during council meetings relates to the 14 Forces of Magnetism. Q: How does group facilitation during council meetings relate to the 14 Forces of Magnetism?

A: While several of the 14 Forces of Magnetism apply to the process and results of group facilitation, there is specific application to Force 2: Organizational structure, Force 6: Quality of care, and Force 8: Consultation and resources.

Specific examples include:

  • Force 2: Organizational structure: The group facilitator addresses agenda item identification and methodical group member selection.
  • Force 6: Quality of care: The group facilitator addresses the involvement of nurses from various settings and all levels of the organization in establishing, monitoring, and evaluating practice standards. Facilitation can be instrumental in ensuring engagement, dissemination, and enculturation of the organizational quality infrastructure.
  • Force 8: Consultation and resources: The group facilitator makes sure group members network with each other in facilitated groups, thus establishing a deepened knowledge related to the practice of nursing.
