This week's expert, Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, gives you tips on preparing your staff to implement evidence-based practice (EBP).
Q: What steps should I take to prepare my staff to implement EBP?
A: As the leader in the EBP movement, prepare carefully for a meeting with your staff. All staff development specialists are likely familiar with EBP in the clinical setting, so this will not be a totally foreign concept. However, implementing staff development EBP is another matter. Here are some suggestions for preparing your staff to implement EBP:
- Provide a comfortable environment. Present the information in a relaxed atmosphere where staff members feel free to ask questions and make comments.
- Ensure consistency of definition. Make sure everyone is defining EBP in staff development the same way.
- Ensure consistency of goals. Work with your staff to formulate realistic goals. Never establish goals in isolation.
