The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) recently issued an alert cautioning that hostility, rude language, and other adverse behavior can threaten patient safety. It will require hospitals to establish codes of conduct by 2009.

According to The Joint Commission in the new Sentinel Event Alert, behaviors such as physical threats, verbal outbursts, and refusal to complete work can result in a plethora of adverse outcomes including medical errors and poor patient satisfaction. The alert urges healthcare organizations to take specific steps to help put an end to bad behaviors. These steps include:

  • Educating all healthcare team members about professional behavior
  • Determining how and when disciplinary actions should begin
  • Developing a system to detect and receive reports of unprofessional behavior
