In the news: Bye, bye bullies: The Joint Commission addresses intimidating behaviors

A dirty look from a physician. A rude comment from a colleague. An outburst by a nurse manager. All are viewed as hostile behaviors and none will be tolerated by The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) starting on January 1, 2009.

The accreditation organization recently released a new Sentinel Event Alert, requiring healthcare organizations to create a code of conduct by next year that defines acceptable and unacceptable behaviors in the workplace. Organizations are also being tasked with finding a formal process for managing the behaviors, and risk losing accreditation without compliance.

Various studies and research have shown that disruptive and aggressive behaviors create hazardous work environments and compromise patient care. A 2003 report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, for example, revealed that 40% of healthcare workers said they'd keep quiet during a patient care event rather than confront a known bully.
