Inside the news: Competition for new nurses heats up in Alabama

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, July 8, 2008

Incentives may be the key to recruiting new employees. Three Birmingham, AL, hospitals are keeping up in the industry by recruiting nurses with creative enticements such as iPods and flat-screen TVs.

Children’s Health System—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2007—recruits new graduates by offering six-month internship programs. The program allows new nurses time to find the department that best suits their skills. Children’s also provides onsite daycare and scheduling options for employees.

Trinity Medical Center recruits nurses with a point system. Nurses accrue points, along with extra pay, each time they work an extra shift. Nurses can redeem their points for products such as iPods and flat-screen TVs. And Brookwood Medical Center offers flexible scheduling and an option that allows nurses to receive an increase in pay by passing on benefits such as health insurance. Brookwood, like many organizations across the country, also provides monetary incentives when employees recruit people to fill empty positions.
