Inside the Forces: Pilot-test evidence-based practice changes at your facility

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 24, 2008

For organizations to meet Force of Magnetism 6: Quality care and Force of Magnetism 7: Quality improvement expectations, they must make evidence-based practice changes. When deciding to make these changes, evaluate the outcomes—never assume that changes in clinical practice will have the anticipated outcomes.

Pilot-test the changes on one or two clinical units to help detect unexpected outcomes and to understand any implementation-related problems. Based on the findings from the pilot units, you can decide to move forward with the practice change in all of the applicable units or to modify or reject the change. Even if the implementation is successful, the project is not complete. Any evidence-based practice project requires clinicians to monitor the findings in an ongoing fashion. New knowledge or information can be developed and will need to be integrated into the practice change.
