Inside scoop from our experts: Get the word out on nursing ethics

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 24, 2008

This week, a reader asks for different methods on educating staff nurses about nursing ethics. Read the response from our advisor Gina Boring, MSN, RN, director for the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.

Q: What are some different methods for educating nurses about nursing ethics?

A: Ethics are widely discussed and firmly entrenched at organizations pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation and are a key part of Force of Magnetism 6: Quality of care. But ensuring that the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses is widely known by staff nurses and having resources for ethical discussions can be a difficult undertaking.

Start by providing monthly education days on the ANA code of ethics, as well as creating a shared decision-making forum where nurses can ask questions and receive feedback on the code of ethics. Below are a few more examples on how you can educate staff nurses about ethical standards to meet Force 6 expectations.

Include a copy of the ANA code of ethics in:

  • the new nurse orientation package
  • nurse competency updates
  • a frame for each nursing unit
  • a colorful poster display for each nursing unit
