Inside the Forces: Create a supportive peer review culture
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 17, 2008
Peer review falls under three of the 14 Forces of Magnetism: Force 4: Personnel policies and procedures; Force 6: Quality care; and Force 9: Autonomy. For an organization to create a culture that supports peer review, it needs to set the following three expectations:
- Set and communicate expectations: Tell every nurse in writing what is expected of them at the organization so each nurse understands his or her responsibilities to provide excellent care.
- Measure performance against expectations: Once all nurses know what the expectations are, their performances should be measured against those expectations.
- Provide periodic feedback: Give ongoing feedback to nurses to reinforce expectations and focus on self-improvement. Nurses can improve only when they receive honest, regular feedback on how they are performing.
