This week's expert, Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, walks us through some of the obstacles you might face when instituting evidence-based practice (EBP) at your facility.

Q: What barriers will I possibly face when instituting EBP, and how can I overcome them?

A: It is never easy to implement a new way of conducting business, and you will face barriers to the implementation of EBP in staff development. A significant amount of resistance may be displayed by staff development specialists within your own department. Change is difficult and may trigger the following concerns:

  • Fear of not being able to comprehend and/or implement EBP in staff development
  • Concern that EBP may cause more work
  • Fear that EBP may show staff development inadequacies
  • Dislike of the research process
  • Concern that EBP may lead to a change in roles and responsibilities

These fears, concerns, and dislikes are not unreasonable and require that the person in charge of implementing EBP in staff development provides education about the process and designs a careful plan for its implementation. Note that all members of the department will ultimately play a significant role in either its success or its failure.
