Alabama hospital inducts nurses into its hall of fame

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 3, 2008

Children’s Health System in Birmingham, AL, wanted to find a unique way to mark the milestone reached by 1,370 of its nurses who have been at the facility for more than 10 years—and it wanted a method that recognized the dedication of those nurses to providing their patients with excellent care. After conducting research for best practices, Children’s—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2007—came up with a way that truly spotlighted appreciation of its staff nurses: the nursing hall of fame

The first inductee into the nursing hall of fame was Surpora Thomas, CNE, who started her care-giving services at Children’s 46 years ago as a staff nurse. And starting in 2009, up to three nurses a year will be inducted into the nursing hall of fame. Inductees must currently be an RN or have been an RN at Children’s for more than 10 years, and all nominees must represent nursing excellence in leadership, practice, education, or research.
