Solving problems with evidence

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 3, 2008

A healthcare organization’s leadership team must be willing and able to pursue evidence-based answers to solve everyday problems. One example is the issue of nurse scheduling. The management team should conduct literature searches and obtain evidence about “best practices” in relation to scheduling nurses. If no specific evidence exists, the management team could collect information from organizations with the lowest turnover rates. The leadership team also could collect specific data from staff nurses about their preferred work hours. This information could be included in an analysis of the unit’s daily census, rates of admission and discharges, or other indicators of department activity.
