Ask the expert: Gaining leadership support through education
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, June 3, 2008
This week, a reader asks how to educate the leadership team about the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) to gain support. Read the response from our advisor Gina Boring, MSN, RN, MRP director at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.
Q: How do you educate the leadership team about the Magnet Recognition Program® so that you gain their support?
A: To successfully work toward MRP designation, the MRP director and the CNO must gain support and commitment from the leadership team. Consider giving a presentation early in your designation effort as a way to educate, excite, and engage the leadership team. The following concepts may be included in the presentation:
- History and background of the Magnet Recognition Program®
- Identification of hospitals in your market that have achieved designation
- Relevance of obtaining designation to your organization
- Benefits to patients, employees, and the organization
- Costs and economic benefits associated with pursuing designation
- How your organization compares to designated organizations in terms of RN turnover, RN vacancy, and patient outcome
- Brief overview of needed cultural transformation
