Implementing success with a nurse researcher

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 27, 2008

One of the greatest challenges in nursing is the focus on nursing research and implementation of evidence-based practice in clinical settings. For those organizations willing and able to commit to the implementation of a nursing research program, strong leadership is needed from an advanced practice nurse expert or a nurse researcher who is knowledgeable and experienced in generating, conducting, analyzing, and implementing nursing research. A nurse researcher provides the expertise needed to develop a research program, and work with the institutional review board, research and development committees, and the nursing research shared governance councils at the unit and organization levels.

When educating staff nurses on research, a nurse researcher should begin with projects such as:

  • Doing literature reviews, critiquing research articles, and using journal clubs in clinical research
  • Finding resources and funding for research
  • Community partnerships through local colleges and universities
  • Improving patient care through applied nursing research
