Build relationships for nurse retention

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 27, 2008

Beverly Loscher, RN, long-term care director of nursing at TLC Health Nursing Facility in Irving, NY, finds the relationship as important as the job when it comes to keeping nurses at the bedside.

“The process entails listening, service on my part, attention to their vacation needs, equal recognition, and thanks in front of peers when justified,” says Loscher. “Be there for them in every way a nurse needs back-up—from the blown light bulb, to policy review, to securing whatever is needed for patient care to continue. My job is to get out of the way and remove the barriers so they can be effective. Always look for the bright side and keep your sense of humor.  In the end, learn to say ‘I'm sorry, there's no quick fix, but I'm not leaving you with the problem.’ ”
