Ask the expert: Determining RNs perception on providing quality care
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 27, 2008
This week, a reader asks how to determine a nurse’s perception of quality care in an organization. Read the response below from our advisor Carolyn Lewis, PhD, RN, CNA,BC, assistant dean of nursing, Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY:
Q: How do you determine a nurse’s perception of quality care in your organization?
A: The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) written documentation must provide evidence that nurses believe they are providing quality care to patients and that there is support throughout the organization, the department of nursing, and the unit for nurse initiatives that provide evidence of quality and safety of patient care delivery.
To achieve this expectation, MRP applicants are encouraged to participate in the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) RN satisfaction survey. After participation, individual institutions receive a report containing a table that provides benchmarking data from other facilities within the same setting. Quality-of-care results from the survey will provide the department of nursing with the mean score for comparing the organization to all other facilities submitting data to NDNQI. Scores are presented in the aggregate as well as on units by category, including critical care, surgical, medical-surgical, pediatrics, and maternal-newborn. Compare the mean to your result to determine RNs perception of quality care in your organization.
