A teambuilding effort leaves one unit 264 pounds healthier

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 20, 2008

Thirty-six nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago—an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2006—have been enjoying more energy and a healthier lifestyle from successfully tackling a weight-loss challenge and losing a team-total of 264 pounds

The NICU nurses were inspired by Bernie Salazar, who was a contestant on the TV show “The Biggest Loser” and the son of NICU nurse Darma Rivera, RN. The nurses lost a combined 264 pounds in about two months, and a winner was chosen based on percentage of body fat lost. Tracy Bucciarelli, RN, BSN, lost 17.4% body fat and won a spa package to a local salon—she now bypasses the elevator and walks up 10 flights of stairs to the NICU.

The NICU weight-loss success has been inspirational for the whole hospital and the perinatal floor recently started theirown weight-loss challenge.
