Ask the expert: Building a designation budget

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, May 20, 2008

This week, a reader asks what items should be considered when creating a budget for ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) designation. Read the response from advisor Gina Boring, MSN, RN, MRP director at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.

Q: What items should be considered when creating a budget for Magnet Recognition Program® designation?

A: When deciding funds to be spent on the MRP process, facilities must determine whether the MRP budget will be separate or included in the nursing administration budget. The budget should include funds for supporting nurses in becoming certified, copying costs for any handouts related to the program, books to support leaders and staff, travel for staff to MRP conferences, and more. But take care to not deplete the funds before it comes time to writing and submitting the documentation. Make sure enough money is left over at the end of your journey for the following six expenses:

  1. Appraiser honorarium for reviewing the written documentation
  2. Shipping the documentation
  3. Site visit (appraiser travel expenses and fees)
  4. Consultant fees (if you choose to have a consultant)
  5. Proofreader/reviewer
  6. Copying and binding
