More California residents are becoming nurses, according to a state study, and the numbers are attributed largely to a recent government initiative.

According to the report released by the state Labor and Workforce Development Agency, about 10,400 nurses are expected to graduate from California nursing programs this year, demonstrating a 68% increase from the 2003-04 academic year.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) launched the California Nurse Education Initiative back in April 2005, expanding the number of nursing programs and helping to result in the new graduate increase.
