Healthcare facilities everywhere may be feeling the sting of the nursing shortage, but most likely not as much as those in New York. A study conducted by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) revealed the state of New York's nursing shortage is more severe than that of the national average.

After surveying more than 125 hospitals across the state, HANYS discovered 80% of respondents had RN shortages. The Workforce Advocacy survey also found the statewide vacancy rate for RNs increased to 8.8% in 2007, jumping from a rate of 6.38% in 2006 and passing the national rate of 8.5 %.

In an attempt to solve nurse shortage challenges, the HANYS and State Senator George Maziarz (R-Newfane) are pushing for legislation that would grant nursing schools and educational institutions, along with healthcare providers, funds to develop more entry and advanced level nurses.
