Hospitals in Indianapolis, IN, are boosting efforts to protect staff members from injuries that can be sustained from lifting patients by developing lift teams.

The lift team at Community Health Network, for example, is on call 12 hours each day and consists of trained workers who use state-of-the-art equipment to move patients in, out, or even within, their hospital beds. All team members participate in a three-week training session prior to their involvement.

Clarian Health has also instituted a lift team, comprised of 14 staff members who respond to about 80 calls a day to provide assistance with lifting patients. Clarian reports that its staff injury costs have decreased from $189,696 in 2005 to $56,988 in 2006.
