Ask the expert: Sustaining a life-long learning environment

This week, a reader asks why creating and maintaining an environment of life-long learning is critical to ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) success. Read the response below from our advisor Carolyn Lewis, PhD, RN, CNA,BC, assistant dean of nursing, Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Lexington, KY.
Q: Why is creating and maintaining an environment of life-long learning critical to MRP success?
A: As the MRP journey evolved in one hospital seeking designation, the nurses were encouraged to participate in one of the many education tracts available (e.g., formal education, national certification, attendance at national nursing conferences, internal educational programs) and supported throughout their endeavors.
This commitment to life-long learning had an unexpected result. As evidence of many of the MRP concepts fell into place, physicians reported (in a physician satisfaction survey) that the number one satisfier at the hospital was the quality of nursing care provided to their patients. This response was unexpected, but highly valued, and supported the notion that life-long learning has an important role in an MRP environment.
