Ask the expert: Identifying the role of a group facilitator

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 15, 2008

This week, a reader asks what role a group facilitator plays in council meetings. Read the response below from our advisor Meryl Montgomery, RN, MSN, director of the learning center and ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® project director at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, GA.

Q: What role does a group facilitator play in council meetings?

A: Council meetings are created to achieve specific goals, and they have timed agendas, standardized minutes, and ground rules. Facilitators have distinct roles for council meetings, which include a few of the following:

  • Setting agendas that display realistic goals, provide ways to accomplish goals, and encourage commitment and involvement
  • Listening, questioning, and managing conflict and group dynamics
  • Improving meeting effectiveness
  • Providing basic tools for guiding the group through various activities to achieve goals (e.g., use of graphics, videos, or brainstorming)
