Addressing diversity in the nursing workforce
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 8, 2008
Wanting to improve the care of patients from diverse backgrounds at Children's Hospital Boston (CHB), Eileen Sporing, RN, MSN, CNO, looked to the hospital's multicultural nurses for a solution. The resolution resulted in CHB--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® (MRP) recipient in 2003--developing a multicultural nurses forum. According to Sporing, the forum educates nursing staff about workforce diversity and providing culturally appropriate care.
As an interesting side note to the project, CHB has found the forum to be critical in educating non-nursing staff about nursing careers. Nancy Joseph, RN, MSN, FNP-C, a CHB nurse practitioner, forum member, and a member of the organization's recruitment and retention committee, says the forum is planning events to attract students and staff from diverse backgrounds to the nursing profession. The multicultural nurses forum is preparing to launch an activity for clinical assistants called "Chat and Snack." According to Joseph, the event will help any clinical assistant with an interest in a nursing career to speak with a nurse from CHB who shares the same background and can offer information and support.
