Nation’s largest nursing school continues to grow

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, April 7, 2008

The national nursing shortage continues to cast a dark shadow on our healthcare system. Arizona State University's (ASU) College of Nursing & Healthcare Innovation is trying to shine a light for other institutions to follow.

Last week, ASU, the largest nursing school in the country with nearly 2,000 students, broke ground on a modern, $30 million addition to its school. The addition will be completed in 2009. In the past six years, the school has doubled its number of graduates and in the past three years, has recruited 23 new full-time faculty members.

A $220 million city bond has helped fund the campus changes that will hopefully put a dent in the state's nursing shortage. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Arizona has 119 fewer nurses per 100,000 people than the national average.
