Boston hospital aims to combat childhood obesity

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, April 1, 2008

With childhood obesity on the rise, programs are rapidly being developed to help children live a healthier lifestyle. Great Moves!--a weight management program for children ages six to 18 years old--provides information to children and their parents about nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral support. And Children's Hospital Boston--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2007--is exemplifying Force of Magnetism 10: Community and the healthcare organization by having a group of its physicians collaborate with Great Moves! at its new center in Newton, MA.

The new center has a gym for fitness activities, such as the game Dance Dance Revolution, and a kitchen for teaching children how to prepare healthy meals. The group of physicians from Children's Hospital Boston will be joined by a nutritionist, psychologist, exercise physiologist, and social workers, who will all be on-site to interact with children about ways to live healthier lifestyles. And Great Moves! isn't a program for kids to complete on their own--the parents are actively involved. During a six-month period, parents are expected to attend nutrition and behavioral classes and attend counseling sessions with their children.
