With more than 10 million members of the Baby Boomer generation expected to face Alzheimer's during their lifetime, nurses and other hospital workers will be affected by the increased strain on the healthcare system, according to a recent report.

The report, which was released by the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago, IL, noted that the disease is now the seventh deadliest in the nation. The association also reported that there will be 500,000 new cases of the disease by the year 2010 and about 1 million new cases annually by 2050.

People who are 65 or older are at the highest risk for the disease, the report states. Since most people with Alzheimer's are eligible for Medicare, an escalating number of Alzheimer's patients will put significant stress on the federal health insurance program. There's hope for new treatments for Alzheimer's, according to the report; new drugs being tested may alter the course of the disease. However, these efforts require a great deal more money and research before they can come to fruition.
