Mentoring new graduate hires

HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 25, 2008

At State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY,--an organization pursuing ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® designation--new graduate hires are assigned to mentors for a year. The mentors are nurses who volunteer their time to provide leadership, guidance, and support to new hires.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center conducts a nursing mentor workshop that provides training for nursing staff on how to model and facilitate growth in professional behaviors and skills with new hires. The workshop is held on a rotating basis so new employees interested in becoming a mentor can attend at any time.

"The mentoring program is in conjunction with our new graduate workshop, which is based on nursing roles from Patricia Benner: helping role, teaching function, diagnostic and monitoring function, effective management, etc.," says Dianne Forbes Woods, RN, deputy nursing director. "We do not require any formal reporting of mentoring outcomes, but the informal feedback is very positive."
