Number of nursing school grads rise, number of applications fall

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, March 17, 2008

The number of nursing school graduates went up in 2005-2006 according to recent data released by the National League for Nursing, but 88,000 candidates-one in three applications submitted-still couldn't find a spot in a nursing school.

The statistics are from the Nursing Data Review Academic Year 2005-2006, an annual report compiled by the National League for Nursing. The data also revealed an increase in minority and male nursing graduates. The growth in the percentage of men has been slow but steady in the past three years, topping out at 12.1% of graduates in this report.

Although there was also a 5% increase in admissions across all RN programs-including a 20% rise in baccalaureate degree programs-applications fell 8.7% from an all-time high the previous year. A lack of educators and widespread knowledge about the challenge of getting accepted are thought to be the major causes, according to experts.
