Demonstrating professional models of care
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, March 11, 2008
Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) in Portsmouth, OH--an ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recipient in 2008--chose patient-centered care as its professional model of care. After the model was established, SOMC held a celebratory event where every department in the organization submitted a poster to demonstrate how the unit implemented their unique care-delivery models based on the patient-centered care principles.
"We sometimes think of patient-centered care being nursing specific, but it affects every department from dietary to housekeeping," says Karen Thompson, RN, MS, CNS, director of home health services at SOMC. "Our celebration allowed every department within SOMC to look at the unique innovations of patient-centered care and how they may adapt some of the principles as part of their unit's care-delivery model."
