Most staff-development specialists groan when asked to evaluate and update their orientation programs. One of the few certainties in healthcare staff development is that orientation is in a constant state of revision.

Arrange orientation classes and self-learning activities in conjunction with other programs as often as possible. For example, if there is a certain skill that all employees must demonstrate annually (e.g., proper use of fire extinguishers), arrange for these monitored demonstrations to take place when new employees are present. This allows both new and current employees to meet a mandatory requirement without the staff development department having to schedule numerous, unplanned demonstrations.
