New technology at a West Virginian hospital is helping to ensure patient safety by controlling medication dosages.

Fairmont General Hospital in Fairmont, WV, recently purchased 130 "smart" IV pumps. These pumps monitor and control medication dosages. Before administering medication, a nurse enters a patient's prescription information into the pump; the machine then tests for abnormalities (such as unusual dosages). An alarm will sound if an error is sensed, preventing the patient from possible harm.

Nurses will receive training on the pumps prior to their implementation on March 3. Along with nursing, the upgrade involved efforts in multiple hospital departments, including pharmacy, materials management, and information technology.
