Ask the expert: Get nurses to share their stories
HCPro's Weekly Update on the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®*, February 26, 2008
This week, a reader asks how to get nurses to share stories when collecting evidence for the written documentation. Read the response below from our advisor, Gina Boring, MSN, RN, project director of the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® at Aultman Health Foundation in Canton, OH.
Q: How do you get nurses to share their stories when collecting evidence for the written documentation?
A: Nurses don't usually share uncommon acts of valor, so you can communicate to them through newsletters, e-mails, council meetings, and your Intranet. You can also pose the following two questions to get nurses to share their extraordinary stories:
- What's the one thing you hope to read about in the written documentation that best exemplifies your unit or a nurse on your unit?
- Can you share a story about a nurse who had a positive effect on a patient outcome?
