What do recruiters look for in a candidate?

Stressed Out Nurses Weekly, February 25, 2008

Independent recruiters and human resource professionals both agree on what to look for in a potential candidate.

  • Whether you are a new grad or an experienced nurse, always keep in mind that old adage, "First appearances are important." Invest in a coordinated, neutral tone, business-like outfit that flatters your body type.
  • Prepare a list of questions about the facility and the job. Take this list with you in a notebook and keep it handy for reference, as well as for taking notes along the way.
  • Do not ask about benefits until you're offered the job.
  • Never state a specific salary requirement. Keep this "open for discussion" verbally, as well as on any personnel form.

Beyond the basic requirements of the position, the interviewer is always looking for candidates who exhibit good interpersonal skills-good eye contact, good verbal skills, good preparation, and not easily flustered by a negative question.
